Thursday | 11:10 am-12:40 pm | LINDELL D
This interactive workshop will demonstrate how ungrading and alternative forms of assessment can work together to reimagine student evaluation. Instructors often shift one element of course design each term. Pairing ungrading with creative and open-ended projects like the “unessay” can transform not just assessment but also course engagement itself. Participants will go through a course redesign workshop that has them exploring samples of previous student work, reflecting on inclusive assessment design using the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, and considering assessment alternatives like contract grading and reflective verbal process letters. Guided by a digital “ungrading journal,” attendees will leave with draft plans for adapting their own courses to integrate alternative grading and assessment strategies that foster student creativity, accountability, and empowerment.

Thursday | 1:00 pm-2:30 pm | KINGSBURY
Salon, literally meaning "larger reception room" in French, was developed in the17th and 18th centuries as a space where women of high education hosted artists, writers, philosophers to engage socially in new ideas that in turn filtered through society. Today, I use this method with winning results in both my Applied Sociological Theory and my graduate Advanced Applied Sociological Theory courses. This workshop engages the method with attendees, recreating the experience via a shared reading and discussion, hands on activities that reach all types of learners and a feedback session at the end to culminate new ideas for the method. This method fosters deep connection between students and aids their fears of disseminating and critiquing social theory.

Professional Development Committee Session As many hiring committee chairs can attest, curriculum vitae often vary significantly in their professional “presentation of self.” The focus of this interactive workshop is to provide ideas for polishing, revising, and updating a CV for an academic position. Rather than offering concrete “rules” of CV construction, we think through how to tell the stories of our academic selves during the workshop. Through analysis of samples and discussion of current trends for content, style, format, and length, this workshop provides an opportunity to consider how to best communicate our talents and experiences through a curriculum vitae.

29. Decolonizing “Introduction to Sociology” in Community College: Context, Theory, Application [Workshop]
Thursday | 4:40 pm-6:10 pm | LINDELL B
Decolonizing the curriculum is at the forefront of contemporary sociological pedagogy. Community colleges face unique challenges when pushing the pedagogical envelope of the introductory class. We need to engage our students in a meaningful curriculum that honors the best of the traditional canon (to ensure transferability) and incorporates students’ lives and histories through the lens of sociology. Our students are diverse, but national politics are erasing their experiences. Decolonizing our introductory courses offers a corrective. The purpose of this moderated workshop is to create a space for sociologists in community colleges, or anyone else whose focus is the introductory class, to discuss practical applications for decolonizing our curriculum. The facilitators will present foundational and current thinking on decolonizing our discipline after which we will share in Q & A.

Publications Committee Session Publications are essential in academia, yet getting your work published in a journal poses a range of challenges that are not always easy to navigate. This session will offer a comprehensive look at the current publishing landscape. Crafted with graduate students and early-career researchers in mind, James Carr of Taylor & Francis, will discuss the best ways to avoid a desk reject, requirements around A.I. use, and journal editor expectations, as well as address any specific concerns you might have. James has been an academic, a researcher, a managing editor of a journal, and now a publisher with T&F, offering a unique blend of perspectives to these various topics.

126. Evaluation is for Everyone: Making Data Meaningful [Workshop]
Saturday | 10:30 am-12:00 pm | MARYLAND A
What if evaluation were not just a compliance task, but one of a sociologist’s most powerful tools for connecting research and practice to real-world change? Too often, it is seen as a technical requirement for funders or a specialized task for data experts, rather than an integral part of everyday sociological practice. In reality, evaluation is a living process that links vision to action, action to learning, and learning to lasting impact. Aligned with the 2026 MSS theme on care and sociological vocation, this interactive workshop reframes evaluation as a practical, equity-driven, and people-centered process that embodies care by valuing lived experience, amplifying community voice, and fostering meaningful collaboration. During the session, participants will gain practical strategies and insights to: Recognize how evaluation is already embedded in your daily practice and connect it to powerful, people-centered frameworks; Enhance evaluation habits, both formal and informal, by integrating strategies that elevate community voice and advance equity; Apply strengths to transform feedback and data into actions that drive meaningful, real-world impact. You will leave ready to put evaluation into action, strengthening your practice while intentionally connecting every decision to the values and impacts that matter most.

127. Teaching Trauma and Humanity in Sociology [Thematic Workshop]
Saturday | 10:30 am-12:00 pm | KINGSBURY
Teaching workshops entitled “Teaching Difficult Topics” have proliferated in the past decade, attempting to provide educators with ways to discuss socially “tough” topics, pointing to specific subject areas, especially those considered “political.” Sociologists research and teach science that regularly becomes politicized and manipulated. These ideas can become short social media bytes leading even well-intentioned students and educators to give abbreviated explanations. Sociologists are faced daily with these politicized and reduced versions of our science, but we also must recognize that our science directly deals with human oppression, violence, and intergenerational traumas. Despite political polarization, confidence in the discipline and in sociologically proven truths is the way to teach any topic. In this workshop we will discuss how to guide students to research these questions for themselves while fostering an environment that respects the dignity and humanity of those included sociological research that we teach. We will discuss how to be trauma-informed and thoughtful in pedagogy from syllabus to discussion activities in ways that help instructors as they, too, engage in teaching topics that include and shape their own human experience.

150. Everything is Sociological: Using the Sociological Imagination to Prepare Community College Students for Transfer, Career, and Everyday Life [Workshop]
Saturday | 2:50 pm-4:20 pm | PORTLAND
Most community college students encounter sociology by chance, often to fulfill a general education or program requirement. For many, it will be the only sociology course they ever take. How can we use this single opportunity to help students develop a lasting sociological imagination? How can we use this opportunity to help them carry sociology beyond our classrooms? This interactive session explores strategies for making sociology not only relevant, but essential, to students across diverse academic and career paths. Workshop facilitators will share and discuss practical approaches for sparking curiosity, connecting course material to the lived experiences of students, and fostering critical thinking that endures. In the spirit of collaboration, attendees are encouraged to bring their own ideas and examples. A shared Google Doc will be created during the session for ongoing resource exchange to extend after the session ends.

Sunday | 10:30 am-12:00 pm | PORTLAND
This session is an interactive professional development workshop that offers insights and tips for those who want to learn more about photovoice and data walks. Researchers with the University of Missouri conducted a study that explored the lived experiences, narratives, and values that shape rural Missouri life and inform peoples’ perceptions of their communities’ well-being and ability to thrive.  In this presentation, we outline the ways we conducted and analyzed photovoice methods and how we shared findings through data walks. Photovoice is a participatory visual research method where participants use photography and narrative to document their community's strengths and concerns. Data walking is an interactive presentation approach in which researchers display findings in visual images in “stations” around a room to encourage people to engage and interpret information as they walk around a space. Examples of how photovoice and data walks can be included in teaching contexts will also be discussed.

Sunday | 12:20 pm-1:50 pm | MARYLAND B
TRAILS is a resource that is included with your ASA membership. TRAILS is a place to find a range of peer-reviewed activities, assignments, and syllabi to help support scholarly teaching. Further, publishing on TRAILS allows you to demonstrate scholarly teaching. In this workshop, participants will leave with the start of something they can develop and submit to TRAILS. Participants will learn about TRAILS, the publication criteria TRAILS uses, and tips for making a successful submission. Attendees will learn about the qualities of a strong submission.
  • Facilitator Nicholas Baxter, Indiana University Kokomo
  • Facilitator Pamela Monaghan-Geernaert, Northern State University
